Why Do I Have Roaches All of a Sudden?

Last week the kitchen was fine. Now there are roaches by the sink and one ran across the bathroom floor. Here is what changed and what to do next.

Quick answer

Roaches usually show up suddenly for one of three reasons. A storm or heat wave pushed big outdoor roaches inside, someone carried German roaches in on boxes or used items, or roaches moved over from a neighbor. The kind of roach tells you which one it is and what fix will work.

First, Figure Out Which Roach You Have

Texas A&M AgriLife lists the American, German, oriental and smokybrown as the most common roaches in Texas. It also notes the Turkestan roach is turning up more often, mostly in the western part of the state.

For a quick check, look at size and where you found it:

  • Big, reddish brown, 1½ to 2 inches. Likely an American roach. These come from drains, sewers and the yard.
  • Small, tan, ½ to ⅝ inch, two dark stripes behind the head. A German roach. These live and breed inside.
  • Dark brown to black, about 1¼ inches. Possibly an oriental roach, which likes damp spots near doors and crawl spaces.

The difference matters. A few big roaches wandering in is a very different problem from small roaches breeding in your kitchen. Our German cockroach guide has photos and more detail.

Why Do I Have Roaches All of a Sudden After It Rains?

Storms are the top reason big roaches appear overnight in Odessa. Heavy rain floods the drains, sewers and burrows where American and oriental roaches live. They climb out looking for a dry place, and your house is right there.

May and August tend to be the wettest months here, so those are common times for a sudden roach rush. They come in through:

  • Floor drains and shower drains
  • Gaps under exterior doors and the garage door
  • Weep holes and cracks around pipes
  • Dryer vents and AC line openings

Heat does the same thing in the other direction. During long dry spells, roaches move inside looking for water.

Why Do I Have Roaches in My Clean House?

This is one of the most common roach questions, and the answer is simple. Roaches don't care how clean you are. A clean home makes them easier to control, but it does not keep them from arriving.

German roaches in particular are hitchhikers. AgriLife says they don't live outdoors in Texas, so they always come from another building. Common ways in:

  • Cardboard boxes from stores, storage units or moving
  • Grocery bags and drink cases
  • Used fridges, microwaves and other appliances
  • Secondhand furniture and electronics
  • Purses, backpacks and lunch boxes from a work or school with roaches

Once inside, they need very little. A drip under the sink, crumbs behind the stove and a warm motor in the fridge are enough. AgriLife says a new generation can grow up in about 100 days, so a few can become a big problem fast.

Your Neighbor May Be the Source

In apartments, duplexes and townhomes, roaches move between units through shared walls, plumbing and electrical lines. If a neighbor treats their unit, roaches may scatter into yours. That is why building wide treatment works far better for German roaches in multi unit housing. Property managers can see commercial pest control.

Seeing Roaches in the Daytime

Roaches are night creatures. AgriLife says German roaches spend about 75 percent of their lives hidden in narrow cracks. If you see them in the open during the day, it usually means there are so many that hiding spots are full. That calls for help right away.

What to Do Next

If you have big roaches

  • Seal gaps under doors with new door sweeps.
  • Keep drain covers on and run water in unused drains.
  • Seal holes around pipes and vents.
  • Ask about an outdoor treatment around the foundation.

If you have small striped roaches

  • Skip store sprays and foggers. They scatter roaches into new rooms.
  • Clean grease and crumbs behind and under appliances.
  • Fix leaks under sinks.
  • Get professional gel bait placed in the cracks where they hide.

Your technician will follow the integrated pest management steps the EPA recommends: find the source, fix what lets roaches thrive and use the least risky product that works. See roach control for the full plan, or general pest control for routine service.

Roach Questions

Can roaches come up through the drain?

Yes. American roaches live in sewers and drains and can crawl up through floor drains, tub drains and sink drains, mostly at night or after heavy rain. Keep drain covers in place, run water in drains you don't use often and seal gaps around pipes under sinks.

Is one roach a sign of a big problem?

It depends on the kind. One big roach after a storm may have just wandered in. One small striped roach in the kitchen is more worrying, because German roaches breed indoors and hide well. If you see the small ones, it is worth an inspection soon.

Do roaches mean my food is unsafe?

Roaches walk through drains and trash, then over counters and dishes, so they can carry germs onto food. AgriLife also links roaches to allergies and asthma. Toss food they have gotten into, store food in sealed containers and wipe counters before cooking.

Why do roaches keep coming back after I spray?

Store sprays kill the roaches they hit but miss the eggs and the many roaches hiding deep in cracks. Egg cases protect the young from most sprays, so new ones hatch later. Baits placed in cracks, plus follow up visits, are what clear an infestation.
